Definitely one of the biggest questions I get asked as a photographer with 10 years of experience is what is the Best Type of Photography Session. Families want to get the most out of their session but at the same time don't want to sign up for something that may not work for them.
Best Type of Photography Session
In this blog post I'm going to go over the different type of sessions I offer and the pros and cons of each. I hope this helps you to decide the right session for you and your family.

Full Length In-Home Family Session
Pour :
-Tells the story of your life right now
-Kids can play in their own rooms or with their own toys while we take photos of other kids or parents.
-Tends to be more creative because the light and individual homes allow for a variety of poses and use of shadow
-Good for kids who are shy or get stressed out in new places
Cons :
-These types of sessions tend to be longer as I may need time to set up each room.
-Some families do not want me to photograph in their home or worry about cleaning up
-Sometimes kids listen less when they are in their own home. Being in a studio makes it feel somehow more serious or that it deserves more of their attention.
-Not every family wants creative photos - some want more traditional posed images.

Outdoor Sessions
Pour :
-Kids can run around and get energy out
-Beautiful scenery and typically flattering light
Cons :
-Kids can run around! The amount of times I've had kids run around, fall into a dirt patch and stain their clothes/scrape their knees etc. is infinite.
-Weather is unpredictable and if you are a family that has a very tight schedule, rescheduling can be a nightmare. It can also be extremely hot or cold.
-People often picture photos with the sunlight streaming behind them. I'll be honest - Montreal is cloudy. This happens maybe 20% of the time. I do not rebook for cloud cover - if I did I'd never do any shoots and it would be a logistical nightmare.

Studio Sessions
Pour :
-Kids are often paying a little more attention in the studio as it's a new place
-No need to rely on weather
-Allows for even light and creative or more traditional photos
-I often run minis or have special sets in studio
Cons :
-It just may not be the type of session you are looking for.
-Some kids take a while to warm up in a new space
-You have to drive there! (vs an in-home session)
