Where should I do my newborn photoshoot?

One of the biggest questions I get asked is where my families should do their newborn photoshoots. A lot of parents say they don't really care and at the end of the day, both will leave you with beautiful photos, but there are some key differences.

How to decide between an in-home and studio newborn photoshoot?

  1. Look at Pinterest/Instagram/my portfolio and see which photos speak to you. Do you prefer photos which are in home or a cleaner studio look?
  2. Are you prepared to make your bed, clean your side tables, clean off your coffee table? I don't ask you to do a lot of things to prep your home but these are the basics.
  3. Does the thought of leaving your home turn you off? Or are you excited about getting out and not having to tidy up.
  4. Do you prefer photos with a lot of shadows, emotion and colour? You may want in-home.
  5. Do you want something crisp clean and minimal? You may want studio.

Other things to consider when choosing an in-home or studio photoshoot

I will ask you to do a minimal amount of tidying up if you choose in-home.

Studio newborn shoots are always significantly shorter. They usually last around 1.5 hours whereas in-home is usually 1h45 - 2h15. The studio is set up for photos, whereas in your home we may have to move lights, furniture or block harsh light.

What about outdoors?

I have done a newborn photoshoot outdoors and it was stunningly beautiful. However, you have to consider a few things:

-If it is cold outside, your baby will be pretty wrapped up - we may not see a lot of their body

-You will be outside so if your baby needs to be changed, fed, etc. you will have to consider how you will work around that. There may not be a bench nearby and there will certainly not be pristine facilities.

-Your baby will wear one outfit only - unless it's warm outside you will likely not be stripping them down in less than ideal weather.

In short, you have to be a family that can roll with the things a little bit more. And typically families who want an outdoor shoot are a bit more outdoorsy and used to having their baby outside too. If this is something you are considering please let me know!
