This week, I am very happy to have Amanda Eaman, my longtime collaborator take over to talk about styling your wardrobe for ALL types of sessions.
Amanda and I have worked together for the past 5 years, and she has styled literally HUNDREDS of you for photoshoots.
Her services are included for most of the photoshoots I offer, and she is a wealth of knowledge.
She is also available for personal styling! I love working with her to think outside the box or approach old classics in fresh ways.

Step 3: Wardrobe (by Amanda Eaman, Stylist)
When you’re planning a photo session—whether it’s a family shoot, maternity session, or even a bold boudoir moment—what you wear can make all the difference. As a stylist, I’m here to do more than just pick pretty clothes. My goal is to help you feel confident, comfortable, and completely aligned with the vision you have for your session. Over time, I’ve noticed the same questions come up again and again. I’m sharing the top three things people ask me—and my go-to advice to help you look and feel your best on shoot day.
1. What should I wear for my photo session?
The most common question—and for good reason! What you wear sets the tone for the whole session. My biggest tip? Choose outfits that reflect your personality and your vision for the photoshoot, but that don’t compete with the purpose of the photo. Avoid loud logos, busy patterns, or super trendy pieces that may date the photos. And always think about your location and background—your outfit should complement, not clash. For group or family sessions, coordination is key—but that doesn’t mean everyone has to match. Think in terms of a color palette rather than identical outfits and try to dress as though you are all headed out to the same place.

Not feeling confident? You're not alone….
2. How do I dress in a way that flatters my body (especially if I’m not feeling 100% confident)?
First, know this: you’re not alone. Most people feel a little nervous being photographed, I certainly do. The right styling can absolutely help you feel more confident, not just for photoshoots but in your everyday life as well. Structured pieces (like a well-fitted blazer or dress with a defined waist), soft layers, and outfits that highlight your best features (think: necklines, sleeve lengths, or silhouettes you love) make a big impact.
Comfort matters too—if you're tugging or adjusting constantly, it shows. Choose pieces that fit well and move with you. Confidence photographs better than perfection.
Need help figuring out what looks best on your body type? Thats what I’m here for!!!!
3. Should I buy something new for my shoot—or work with what I have?
You don’t have to buy something new—often, we can create a beautiful look using pieces you already own. But if you do want to shop, I recommend focusing on timeless staples you’ll wear again, not just a “one-shot” outfit. If you're investing in a new piece, make sure it fits the vibe of the shoot and your personal style.

Bonus questions!
Bonus Q ( Did you really think I could do just 3 😉 : I have no idea where to start—how do I begin planning my outfit?
Start with the mood of the session. Have you taken a moment to hop on Pinterest? If so, please share your inspo with me 🙂 Is it light and airy? Intimate and cozy? Professional and polished? Once you know the vibe, we can narrow down your color palette and choose silhouettes that support that feeling.
If it’s a family shoot, think about what you want to wear first, then build everyone else’s outfits around yours. It’s a great way to stay cohesive while making sure you feel your best. And if you're totally stuck, don’t hesitate to ask me for a mood board or inspiration guide—I can provide you with visuals that help spark ideas.
Bonus Q 2: What should I wear on my feet? Will they even show?
Ah, the eternal question! Footwear can absolutely matter—especially in full-body shots or outdoor locations. For casual shoots (like family or maternity), go for shoes that are clean, neutral, and appropriate for the setting. Barefoot can even be a beautiful option for indoor or studio sessions. When shooting in Old Montreal or in the park, no heels….those cobblestones are hard enough to manoeuvre and heels will just sink into the grass at the park.
For headshots or tighter crops, your shoes might not be visible—but wearing something that makes you feel put-together still matters. If heels give you confidence, wear them. If comfy boots ground your look, go for those. Sneakers are your thing; amazing, let your personality show.
To wrap it up….
I could do this all day BUT remember; no matter what kind of session you’re preparing for, the goal is the same: to feel confident, comfortable, and like the best version of yourself. Styling is just one piece of the puzzle, but it can make a world of difference in how you show up on camera. Whether you’re keeping it simple or going all-out, the most important thing is that your look feels authentic to you. If you’re ever unsure, ask for help—that’s what I’m here for and I LOVE what I do!
To wrap it up…. Thank you Amanda!
