Joyful Studio Photography

I was talking with someone and I said that a lot of men don't want to take part in their family photography sessions. I suggested that maybe it was because they remember what photography was like when they were younger and don't want to be put in any awkward poses. Little do they know I specialize in Joyful Studio Photography.

Here are some reasons why you should NOT be nervous doing a family session with me:

  • I've done a ton of family sessions and seen it ALL from nosebleeds to puking. I really don't think I could be fazed.
  • Families are ALL different. Some are quiet and reserved, some are loud, some are stressed, some are totally chaotic. I respect that and work within each family.
  • Preparation! I PREPARE you with wardrobe guidance and guides.
  • Posing! I POSE you. Even though it doesn't look like it - all my photos start out as poses and then fall apart into fun. Asking you to 'just look natural' doesn't work when you are stressing out about where to put your hands.

More Reasons

  • I read the room. There are a LOT of skills a family photographer must have beyond actually taking photos and reading the room is one of them. Understanding when a kid needs to take a break, or mom is getting stressed. Understanding when the session 'feels' over even if I haven't said it's over - ie calling it. It is important to me that when you look at your photos you have GOOD memories - and are not remember how a session dragged on or was super stressful.
  • Mom must look good. It's a secret amongst family photographers that if mom looks good, she'll buy the photo. That's why I always focus on mom.
  • ALSO, I tend to focus on mom because in most cases she's the one TAKING the photos and there tends to be no photos of her. I try to include solo shots of mom - because lady - you exist too!
  • And yes, I am the mom of two energetic boys so I get it.

Shoot Day

For every session no matter what length I run through a list of must have shots in my head. If I have time I also run through the photos with mom or dad (whoever booked the session) and make sure that we've nailed it.
